Watch Usher’s Gritty Cover of the Chainsmokers’ ‘Don’t Let Me Down’

Singer, backing band deliver raw take on slick pop hit, sneak in famous Outkast horn loop

Usher delivered an energetic cover of the Chainsmokers’ hit with Daya, “Don’t Let Me Down,” during an appearance on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge.

While the cover stayed fairly faithful to the original, Usher and his backing band injected the crystalline pop hit with a fresh layer of rawness. While this made the performance feel on the verge of collapse, Usher’s epic voice served as a crucial guiding force, while the ramshackle feel also allowed the horn section to seamlessly flip the “Don’t Let Me Down” synth stabs into the seminal horn riff from Outkast’s “Spottieottiedopaliscious.”

Usher is set to release his new album, Hard II Love, the follow-up to 2012’s Looking 4 Myself, on September 16th. After announcing the LP, Usher released two new tracks, “Missin U” and “Champions,” which followed previously released album cuts “Crash” and “No Limit,” featuring Young Thug.
