Watch Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Dreamy ‘Ur Life One Night’ Video

‘Multi-Love’ track turns into kaleidoscopic journey inspired by traditional Asian art

Unknown Mortal Orchestra have shared the dreamy, folk art-inspired video for “Ur Life One Night,” a track off the psychedelic outfit’s third LP Multi-Love. Whereas the album’s overarching theme is about a three-way love story coming to an end, the video finds two mortal men constantly in pursuit of an unattainable goddess. The visually incredible story is told through the kaleidoscopic, magical spectrum of traditional Asian art.

“I was really obsessed with working with a director in India because it seemed crazy that they have the biggest film industry in the world and yet I’d never made a video there,” UMO mastermind Ruban Nielson tells Rolling Stone. “I feel really privileged to have connected with [director] Manoj [Leonel Jahson] and to have this video.”

Jahson also discussed the inspiration behind “Ur Life One Night.” “When we first spoke with UMO, the idea of creating something abstract yet fun, for their single ‘Ur Life One Night’ sounded very exciting. I am deeply inspired by the quirky Indian magical-realism from our mythology and wanted to create something rooted, but still visually appealing,” Jahson says. “The music lent a dream-like quality and the lyric pushed us to the motif of the Goddess being pursued, yet always being out of reach.”

Jahson added, “The visual language naturally led to borrowing heavily from Traditional Asian Art including miniature paintings from the Mughal period to create multiple dreams-capes and ended up being a sexually charged riot with a fair dose of humor and symbolism.”

“Ur Life One Night” comes four months after Unknown Mortal Orchestra shared their interactive, equally awesome “Multi-Love” music video/video game.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra continue their U.S. tour through next month before embarking on a long, European tour kicking off September 8th in Helsinki.
