Watch U2 Blast Donald Trump During San Francisco Show

Bono blasts Republican nominee for trying to “run off with the American dream”

U2 mocked Donald Trump and his proposed border wall before performing “Bullet the Blue Sky” at a concert in San Francisco on Wednesday.

The new bit called “Liberty…” found Bono condescending to clips of the Republican nominee touting his vast wealth and plans to build a great wall on the Mexican border. “Now candidate, you understand it’s not just Mexican people who are going to have a problem with this wall of yours,” Bono said. “It’s everyone who loves the idea of America.”

After a short spoken-word interpretation of Emma Lazarus’ Statue of Liberty sonnet, “The New Colossus,” Bono rebuked Trump’s attempts to “run off with the American dream” and lambasted his infamous threat to punch a protestor in the face as U2 slowly built the opening of “Bullet the Blue Sky” to a fever pitch.

Prior to debuting “Liberty…” in San Francisco, Bono called out Trump in an interview with Charlie Rose, while U2 also skewered the nominee during a rendition of “Desire” at the IHeartRadio Festival in September. While the band has always injected political and social commentary into their music and live performances, with any luck the 2016 election will compel Bono to bring back MacPhisto and start prank calling the Trump campaign.
