Watch Tyler, the Creator’s Surreal ‘Buffalo’ Video
Tyler, the Creator balances surreal bleakness and wacky whimsy in his new dual-video for “Buffalo” and “Find Your Wings,” two sonically opposite tracks from his latest LP, Cherry Bomb.
The clip, directed by Wolf Haley (Tyler’s pseudonym), opens with Tyler escaping death by hanging after his noose cracks a tree branch. After putting on dad jeans and a T-shirt that reads “GOLF PRIDE WORLD WIDE,” he’s chased by an angry mob holding baseball bats. The brooding track finds Tyler flipping the bird to his critics and tossing off surreal non-sequiturs (“Peter Parker pick a pack of peppers when the plot thickens / Tyler, the Creator fuckin’ kill you with a popsicle”).
The grainy, VHS-quality segment for “Find Your Wings” features Tyler – backed by members of Odd Future – performing the lush jazz-pop groove on a 1970s-styled TV show. Sporting a goofy smile, Tyler talks about defying easy categorization: “I just wanna show everybody that, hey, I love music. They try to pigeonhole me in this rap box, and it’s like – no, man, I love sound!”
In May, Tyler seemingly indicated on Twitter that Odd Future, his formative collective, had broken up. “Although it’s no more, those 7 letters [OFWGKTA] are forever,” he wrote, a sentiment echoed by rapper Earl Sweatshirt. However, some version of the controversial group will perform at the 2015 edition of Tyler’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival, which takes place November 14th at Los Angeles’ Park at L.A. Coliseum. Though it’s unclear which members will be involved, a representative confirmed plans for a full set to Pitchfork.
