Watch the xx, Florence Welch’s Epic ‘You Got the Love’ Performance
Florence Welch joined the xx for a thrilling performance of Jamie xx’s 2009 reworking of Florence and the Machine‘s cover of “You Got the Love.” It was the final night of the xx’s “Night and Day” residency at the Brixton Academy in London. Candi Stanton originally recorded the song in 1986, while the Source remixed it in 1991 and Florence and the Machine covered it for their 2009 album, Lungs.
The live collaboration opened with Welch trading vocal lines with Oliver Sim and Romy Croft over Jamie xx’s harp-laden groove. Halfway through, the performance took off when the beat dropped out and Welch bounded across the stage, belting the lyrics. The xx and Welch pulled off the classic rise-and-fall with Welch presiding, showing off her disco diva moves.
The xx have performed with several other guests during their “Night and Day” residency including Robyn, Cat Power and Savages’ Jehnny Beth. The band recently released their third album, I See You and will embark on a North American tour this spring including a set at Coachella.
