Watch the xx Break Out ‘On Hold’ for Energetic ‘SNL’ Debut
Performing on U.S. soil for the first time in two-and-a-half years, the xx made their Saturday Night Live debut with two tracks off their upcoming LP I See You.
The London trio of Jamie xx, Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim opened up their musical guest spot with “On Hold,” the Hall & Oates-sampling single from the new album, with Croft and Sim trading verses while Jamie xx constructed the dancefloor-ready beats.
For their second performance of the evening, the xx debuted “I Dare You,” another new cut from I See You, the band’s first album since 2012’s Coexist. I See You is due out January 13th.
Following the arrival of “On Hold,” which features a vocal hook of Hall & Oates’ “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do),” Daryl Hall told Genius of the surprise sample, “It’s always interesting to hear what somebody does with my songs. After a song is written, it belongs to the world and can be interpreted anyway they want. As long as I get paid, of course. Have fun and pay me.”
The xx recently announced a string of tour dates that will take them from Europe to Japan back to Europe then South America between late November and April 1st. However, the trio has not revealed their North American tour plans yet.
