Watch the Avalanches’ Endearing New ‘Because I’m Me’ Video

‘Wildflower’ clip features Camp Lo’s Sonny Cheeba

Capturing the attention of one’s object of affection can be a daunting experience, but the Avalanches turn the yearning and longing for an indifferent crush into an endearing affair in their new “Because I’m Me” video.

In the retro-styled clip directed by Greg Brunkalla in a New York subway station, an adorable young boy has a crush on a subway worker, who seems oblivious to his charms. After she thwarts his attempts at engagement, which includes some pretty solid dance moves, he begins to sing via the band’s sampling reconfigurations of Six Boys in Trouble’s “Why Can’t I Get it Too.”

Soon, a winsome horn section buoys the young boy’s singing and more dancers join in as backup. However, the boy’s attempts go unnoticed, even when Camp Lo’s Sonny Cheeba kicks in some solid verses. Not even a huge blow up heart can capture his crush’s affections.

The song is the first full-length track from the Avalanches’ Wildflower, the band’s first album in 16 years. The group will also reissue its debut album, Since I Left You, via vinyl on January 27, 2017.
