Watch Tegan and Sara Survive Awkward Video Shoot in ‘Boyfriend’ Clip
Tegan and Sara became pop stars with their last LP, 2013’s synth-pop-styled Heartthrob. The duo return with a lighthearted clip for “Boyfriend,” poking fun at the faux-glamour of a pop music video shoot.
The Clea Duvall-directed clip finds the Quin twins running through the gamut of video clichés, with fashion designer Rachel Antonoff attempting to find the perfect backgrounds and extras to highlight the song. The duo lip-sync and emote dramatically into the camera as the set morphs from blowing fans to little girls with hula hoops to ridiculous green screens (including shots of zebras, outer space and dated footage of a little league football game).
“Boyfriend” is the lead single from the duo’s eighth LP, Love You to Death, out June 3rd. The sister duo premiered the track earlier this month via Beats 1, with Sara explaining that the lyrics were inspired by a complex love triangle.
“I think that’s pretty relatable,” she said of the concept. “Obviously, being gay, there’s sort of a bit of a gender twist in the song, and I get that that sometimes doesn’t seem immediately relatable to everybody, whether they’re straight or whatever. But this idea, you know, that we’ve all been in that situation where we really like someone and we want to make it official, and they’re not ready, that’s what the song is about.”
On Monday, Tegan and Sara announced a massive headlining tour, which kicks off September 9th in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
