“I heard about a whirlwind that’s coming ’round / It’s gonna carry off all that isn’t bound,” Tame Impala mastermind Kevin Parker sings on the electro-psych freak-out “Let It Happen.” The song’s nightmarish music video brings that lyric to life, depicting a nervous man’s plane ride into oblivion.
The clip follows the protagonist as he mysteriously moves from airport to hotel room to airplane, culminating in turbulence that rips him out into a swirling sky. “Let It Happen” is the lead single from Tame Impala’s acclaimed third studio LP, Currents, which finds Parker expanding his vintage-toned psychedelic-rock into more digital territory.
“As I was working on [“Let It Happen”], I had this idea for this skipping bit,” Parker told Rolling Stone. “I loved the idea that someone would be listening to the song on their car radio and they’d think that the radio was broken or go, ‘Something’s not right.’ I feel that’s a big part of what I do.
“Everything I do is a mutant cross between a challenge and something that comes naturally,” the musician added of his creative approach. “Making music is so spiritual. I’m not a spiritual person, but music is sacred to me. Trying new things and experimenting is something I push myself to do. It’s one thing to have love for all different kinds of music, it’s another thing to bring them together seamlessly and make them coherent.”
Tame Impala have U.S. tour dates scheduled for the fall, including an October 2nd performance at Austin City Limits.
