Watch Stone Temple Pilots, Joss Stone Blend Grunge and Soul on ‘Kimmel’

Aptly billed “Joss Stone Temple Pilots” breeze through brassy “Interstate Love Song” on latest “Mash Up Monday” installment

Stone Temple Pilots and Chester Bennington amicably parted ways on Monday, but that didn’t stop the band from taking the stage on Jimmy Kimmel Live! later that night. Luckily, the group had already been set up with a new singer: Joss Stone.

Joss Stone Temple Pilots,” as the pair was pun-tastically billed, soared through a rendition of STP’s 1994 hit, “Interstate Love Song” as part of Kimmel‘s ongoing “Mash Up Monday” series. Stone’s brassy, soulful vocals fit perfectly with Stone Temple Pilots’ crunchy, post-grunge riffage, and a three-piece horn section added a bold layer of fanfare to the track’s indelible descending guitar lick.

The STP/Stone pairing marks the latest installment in Kimmel‘s second “Mash Up Monday” series, which will continue through November. Last week, Kimmel hosted Brad Paisley and Color Me Badd to perform the latter’s “I Wanna Sex You Up” as “Color Me Bradd.” The show has yet to announce future performers.

As for Stone Temple Pilots, the Nineties alt-rock outfit find themselves without a singer two-and-a-half years after Chester Bennington replaced original frontman Scott Weiland. While Bennington will return his attention to Linkin Park, the three remaining STP members — Robert DeLeo, Dean DeLeo and Eric Kretz — called the split “a new beginning” and remained optimistic that they would continue to record and tour.

“There is an abundance of new music written, some of which is already recorded,” the band wrote in a statement. “We have had the fortune of playing with some very talented singers over the last few months and will continue to do so until each of us feels and knows when the right person arrives.”
