Watch Smashing Pumpkins Perform Acoustic ‘Gish’ Medley

Billy Corgan recently complained about how his Smashing Pumpkins audiences are “fixated on the past,” so the singer has hit upon a clever new way to revisit that classic material. At the band’s stop at Munhall, Pennsylvania’s Carnegie Music Hall – the second gig on the Pumpkins’ current and first-ever acoustic trek – Corgan busted out a medley of all the soaring riffs from the band’s 1991 debut LP Gish, Alternative Nation reports.

In the medley, delivered during the encore, Corgan ran through all the tracks faster than it would take to play “Rhinoceros.” At one point after “Bury Me,” Corgan forgets the album’s fifth track and begins to strum “Snail,” only to be quickly alerted by the Pumpkinheads in the crowd that it’s actually “Crush.”

“Oh, I played bass on it,” Corgan interjects. The riffs kept coming: “Suffer” then “Snail” then “Tristessa” then “Window Paine.” “It’s amazing how many songs have to do with LSD,” Corgan quipped on the latter.

On the closer “Daydream,” Corgan asked the crowd whether they wanted to hear the whole thing but received a less-than-enthusiastic response. He then briefly teased Siamese Dream‘s “Geek U.S.A.” before stopping again mid-intro. (Corgan instead opted to close out with his rarely played “El-A-Noy.”)

Once Smashing Pumpkins’ acoustic tour wraps, the band will hit the road with Marilyn Manson as the alternative rock gods embark on their co-headlining End Times trek July 7th. The recent acoustic shows have also featured a cameo by bassist Katie Cole, who will officially join the Smashing Pumpkins’ revolving door lineup when the End Times tour begins.
