In January, Skrillex got back into the studio with his former band From First to Last for the first time in over a decade and released a new song, “Make War.” On Tuesday, Skrillex took the reunion to the stage, joining From First to Last at Emo Nite, a monthly Los Angeles event.
As one of the biggest names in electronic music, Skrillex is usually separated from an arena full of fans by a pile of equipment and a DJ booth. But back with From First to Last in the small club Echoplex, he enjoyed an unmediated connection with the audience. He stepped back into the vocalist role with forceful poise, hopping around the stage – lit bright crimson – and gesticulating furiously with his left hand while delivering breathless lines.
Skrillex’s time as From First to Last’s lead singer is documented on 2004’s Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Bodycount and 2006’s Heroine. He eventually split from the group to pursue music on his own. By 2010, he cracked the Hot 100 as an electronic producer with the single “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites.”
