Sia and 13-year-old dancer Maddie Ziegler have reunited for the singer’s minimalist “Cheap Thrills” video after previously collaborating on clips for “Chandelier,” the controversial “Elastic Heart” and “Big Girls Cry.” Sia and Daniel Askill co-directed the duo’s latest effort, Pitchfork reports, that finds Ziegler leading a group of interpretive dancers in front of a pink backdrop.
“Baby I don’t need dollar bills to have fun tonight,” Sia boasts on the bouncy synth-pop track, which features on Sia’s latest LP, This Is Acting. The album includes songs she originally wrote for other artists, and “Cheap Thrills” was intended for Rihanna’s eighth record, Anti, after that singer’s manager requested a similar tune to the Sia-penned Rihanna single “Diamonds.”
“I realized just as soon as I was cutting it that it sounded a little bit too Brit-pop for her,” Sia told Rolling Stone. “There’s something really uplifting about [the song] that put me in a good mood. … It felt very ‘summer’ and fun.”
Last week, the singer-songwriter delivered a bombastic performance of “Bird Set Free” at South by Southwest, which was broadcast on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
