Watch Shawty Lo’s Posthumous Video for ‘Put Some Respek On It’
Shawty Lo’s lavish last music video for “Put Some Respek On It” has arrived one day after the D4L rapper’s death in a car crash.
Directed by Picture Perfect, the clip finds Shawty Lo enjoying a softball game with friends and sharing life’s finer material things with his family. But the clip also has a charming narrative thread, in which the rapper gifts his girl a flashy new car, which promptly gets jacked at a gas station. However, the thieves frantically return the Chevy after discovering the license plate tag reads, “Shawty.”
Shawty Lo (real name Carlos Walker), died Wednesday morning in a car crash in Fulton County, Georgia. He was 40. Police confirmed to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that it was a single car accident, with Walker’s car going over a guardrail, hitting two trees and bursting into flames. Walker was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The two other passengers were taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Walker rose to prominence in 2005 as a member of D4L, which scored a major hit with “Laffy Taffy,” though the group disbanded the following year. Walker embarked on a solo career that included another hit, “Dey Know,” from his 2008 solo album Units in the City. Despite linking up with 50 Cent’s G-Unit, Shawty Lo would not release another studio album, though he continued to churn out mixtapes and appear alongside MCs like Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane and Killer Mike. “Put Some Respek On It” appears on Shawty Lo’s final mixtape, Built Not Bought, which arrived in March.
