In a moment destined to be memed, Mendes attempted to get the crowd to sing the song’s anthemic hook near the end – only to be met with a bored stare from Nicki Minaj, who might not have realized she was on camera.
Inspired in part by Kings of Leon and written with regular songwriting partner Teddy Geiger, the arena rock-worthy “In My Blood” was the lead single off Mendes’ self-titled LP.
Julia Michaels, John Mayer, Khalid and Ed Sheeran also contributed to Shawn Mendes, which debuted at Number One on the Billboard 200. Michaels co-wrote Mendes’ latest single, the cheeky, catchy “Nervous.” Over the summer, the 20-year-old pop star been playing the festival circuit, including a set at Governors Ball in NYC. He’ll launch his world tour in support of his latest album next year.
