Schoolboy Q has unveiled his new video for “John Muir,” which hails from his recently released Blank Face LP. While the rapper doesn’t appear in the clip, it’s shot in a car and gives a passenger-side perspective that juxtaposes harrowing and chilled-out moments in an affectingly jarring way.
The Aplus-directed clip opens with quick bursts of chaos before it flashes back to 24 hours earlier. Throughout the video, a Los Angeles crew can be seen cruising around the city, doing drug deals in the day and evening, robbing people and observing police busts. The violence is set side-by-side against widescreen seemingly peaceful times where they calmly ride through the streets, hookup with friends, flirt with ladies and do mundane things such as hit the drive-thru and fill up on gas.
The Sounwave-produced song is named after the Top Dawg Entertainment rapper’s junior high school. It follows the release of Schoolboy Q’s film video trilogy of “By Any Means,” “Tookie Knows II” and “Black Thoughts.”
