Salt-N-Pepa duked it out on Spike’s Lip Sync Battle, transforming into modern pop divas and referencing some of their musical inspirations in an amiable battle between the longtime friends and collaborators.
To kick things off, Salt went pop-rock, strutting and headbanging her way through Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone.” “Who knew you were a pop diva?” commented host LL Cool J following Salt’s performance.
Pepa gave a positive review of Salt’s lip sync skills before taking the stage. She teased the host and audience by saying her first selection would be O.T. Genasis’ trap hit “Coco” — to LL’s surprise and delight — before actually having her own pop diva moment with Katy Perry’s “Firework.” Much like Salt, Pepa chose a non-hip-hop tune to lip sync because she “can’t sing.” “This is like your second childhood, in the mirror with the brush. I can only lip sync this, so [this show] is perfect!”
For the second round, Salt went back to her roots, tackling Run-DMC’s “It’s Tricky” with the help of some b-boys behind her. “We patterned ourselves after Run-DMC,” she said while looking towards Pepa. “That was my moment right there! I love ’em.” Pepa counteracted with a sparkly jumpsuit and an afro wig as she channeled her inner disco queen on Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.” While she got the whole studio dancing, Pepa had a more emotional reason for choosing the track. “This is for all the survivors out there; all the women who’ve been through some ish.”
In the end, Pepa won the Salt vs. Pepa battle. The duo’s appearance comes after Mike Tyson performed their hit “Push It” on the show in his battle against actor Terry Crews.
