Watch Rob Zombie and Tony Moore’s Gory ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Trailer

Trailer for ‘Assassin’s Creed Unity,’ out this fall, features a bloody backdrop of the French Revolution

Ubisoft premiered a new animated trailer for their upcoming game title, Assassin’s Creed Unity during a demo/Q&A at Comic-Con Friday. The gory clip was created by an appropriate duo of darkness: metal mainstay/horror filmmaker Rob Zombie and The Walking Dead co-creator Tony Moore.

Game Never Over: 10 Most Addictive Video Games

The clip functions as a retelling of the French Revolution and Reign of Terror, the time period that serves as the game’s backdrop. “A desperate people know nothing of mercy,” intones a French narrator. “For years, we the people had suffered the cruelty of men too fat to starve; too rested to care. But no more.”

The clip goes on to excoriate the French nobility in the face of extreme poverty and the drastic measures undertaken that led to the French Revolution. “We surged, unstoppable. The taste of freedom and liberty fell upon each of our lips,” says the narrator. “When La Bastille fell, we grew hungrier; not for bread or for grain, but for justice. Even His Highness wasn’t safe from our reach.”

Zombie tells Rolling Stone he welcomed working in a different sphere other than music. “I thought it was interesting because I never work in the medium of video games, so it was a new thing to do,” Zombie says. “I had just come back from being in France, funny enough, and they said, ‘We want to do this whole French Revolution thing, but we want it to be historically accurate.’ It isn’t, but for the whole background for the beginning, they wanted accuracy.”

Moore, meanwhile, says it was a “particular thrill” to work with Zombie on the trailer, as they were able to combine their visual talents in a unique way.

“Rob’s sensibilities really veer toward that juxtaposition of beauty and gritty visceral horror, which is great for a research junkie like myself,” he says. “The opulence of the period next to that bloody ham steak cross-section of a human neck. That’s the kind of fun stuff I can really sink my teeth into. . . This whole process has been just familiar enough to cut loose and do my thing, but just enough outside my regular wheelhouse that I got to try out some new artistic muscles, which is always engaging. In the end, I had a blast, and I think the team’s love and enthusiasm shines through.”

Assassin’s Creed Unity is out worldwide October 28th on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
