Watch Pixies Burn Down the House in ‘Tenement Song’ Video

Band drop first video off new LP ‘Head Carrier’

Pixies have shared their new video for “Tenement Song,” the first video off the band’s upcoming LP Head Carrier. The Krank! Collective-directed video, inspired by Black Francis’ lyrics as well as Pixies longtime collaborator Vaughan Oliver’s album artwork, offers an animated look inside a soon-to-be-demolished apartment building.

Using a variety of different animation techniques – old school light box, painted animation, rotoscoping and digital compositing – “The Tenement Song” bounces from room to room, from a gang of ghouls playing poker with internal organs as their antes to a swingy Sixties party. The video ends with the building exploding into rubble as its former tenants watch.

Francis recently spoke to Rolling Stone about the difference in his creative process between writing a Pixies track or something for his Frank Black solo project. “I’ve become aware, over time, that there’s kind of this notion that other people have about what sounds more like a Pixies song versus something from a Frank Black solo record,” Francis said. “But I can’t set out on my journey on each song and say, ‘OK, I’m going to do this kind of song.’ Just at some point I can kind of determine, at least based on other people’s comments, ‘OK, this is sort of not feeling so Pixies and maybe not worth pursuing.’ But we don’t want to get locked into that because that means you’ve got all these rules you’re clinging to.”

Head Carrier, the follow-up to 2014’s Indie Cindy and the first Pixies album to feature bassist Paz Lenchantin as an official member, is due out September 30th. Pixies previously shared the new LP cuts “Um Chagga Lugga” and “Talent.”
