Watch My Morning Jacket Bring Thunderous ‘Tropics’ to ‘Colbert’

Jim James and Co. set to close out extensive ‘Waterfall’ tour with four-night NYC stand

My Morning Jacket descended upon The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Monday for a performance of “Tropics,” an expansive track off their latest LP, The Waterfall.

Jim James and Co. tore through the cut, which shifts between the band’s always-potent blend of spaced-out meanderings and loud, delirious displays of heaviness. It all built to a bombastic final breakdown where James traded blistering, tightrope riffs with the band’s thunderous downbeats and the psychotic strikes of a small string section.

My Morning Jacket will close out their expansive 2015 tour in support of The Waterfall with a sold-out four-night stand at the Beacon Theatre in New York City that kicks off tonight, November 24th, and runs through the 28th (with a break on the 26th for Thanksgiving).

The Waterfall marks My Morning Jacket’s first album since 2011’s Circuital and was recorded at a secluded mansion at Stinson Beach in Northern California. Initial recording was disrupted when frontman Jim James suffered a herniated disc while moving an amp, but the injury proved to be a catalyst for The Waterfall and other new songs.
