Watch Muppets Band Dr. Teeth and Electric Mayhem Make Live Debut
Saturday’s Outside Lands Festival had one of the odder surprise appearances of the season: Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, the long-running Muppets band. Over 40 years after their Muppet Show debut, Dr. Teeth, Animal, Lips, Floyd Pepper, Janice and Zoot reunited onstage to “perform” to an incredulous crowd.
The band’s brief five-song set featured their Muppet Movie track “Can You Picture That?” followed by a handful of covers: The Mowgli’s “San Francisco,” Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros’ “Home” and The Band’s “Ophelia.” For the band’s closing number, the Muppets’ take on Joe Cocker’s famed rendition on the Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends,” Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem were joined onstage by the Oakland Tabernacle Choir.
Despite the short set, Animal still managed to fire off a few monster drum solos, with comical shorts padding out the 20-minute performance. Previously, Dr. Teeth and company helped the festival announce its lineup.
The beloved Muppets band has been on a comeback-spree as of late. In December, the Electric Mayhem posted their cover of Paul Simon’s “Kodachrome,” as well as collaborations with Jack White and Dave Grohl, who had a drum-off versus Animal.
