Watch MisterWives Play Three Standouts From Their Debut Album

New York fivesome dances its pain away for our Sperry Sessions live series

MisterWives came together toward the end of 2012, and things swiftly started to move quickly for the New York band: On the first day of the following February, the group played its debut gig at a small club in the TriBeCa, and they’ve since released a breakthrough EP, toured with Bleachers and appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers and Jimmy Kimmel Live. Today, their first full album, Our Own House, finally hits stores, and here you can watch them play three of the record’s most exciting tracks live at Rolling Stone‘s studio as the debut episode in our Sperry Sessions series of live performances.

“I was kind of fed up with writing really sad, depressing songs about devastating love,” singer Mandy Lee says of “Reflections,” the first of the trio of tracks. “So I kind of decided to flip it on its head and make it an upbeat dance anthem to help overcome these feelings.” That vibe comes through in the above performance: The band’s drummer and guitarist quietly lead the way, but by the final chorus, all five members are in complete sync, with Lee grabbing a tambourine for additional percussion.

“Vagabond” and the title track both feature handclap-anchored breakdowns but otherwise diverge. “‘Vagabond’ is a song about feeling alone,” says Lee. “The song is a journey of that emotion and that feeling.” She looks around at her bandmates. “I’m very far away from that feeling now, so it’s a good place to come out of that and sing it and be with all your friends.”
