Following Miley Cyrus‘ unannounced performance at the MTV Video Music Awards and the surprise release of her new album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, the VMA host dropped the new video for the LP’s opening cut “Dooo It!” The video takes the Dead Petz album cover – featuring the singer smearing paint and glitter over her face – and expands on it for four-and-half messy minutes, with Cyrus spreading everything from purple goo and dairy products to sparkled lipstick and ice cream sprinkles over her face.
Keeping with the song’s opening lyrics – “Yeah, I smoke pot / Yeah, I love peace / But I don’t give a fuck / I ain’t no hippie” – Cyrus also blows copious amounts of weed smoke in the camera lens throughout the “Dooo It!” clip. (The video even opens up with Cyrus saying she needs marijuana.)
Dead Petz is a collaboration between Cyrus and the Flaming Lips, with producers Mike Will Made It and Oren Yoel contributing a handful of tracks. Cyrus and Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne first bonded following the death of Cyrus’ dog Floyd in April 2014. “Floyd and I always listened to the Flaming Lips,” Cyrus told Rolling Stone in May 2014. “So now when I listen to that music, I totally feel the presence of him still being there, you know?”
Cyrus added, “I’ve been listening to [the Flaming Lips] for the past three months, to the exclusion of all other music – literally, I’ve erased everything else on my phone. My entire world is wrapped up in this collaboration and magical friendship.” Coyne also told Rolling Stone, “Our shows are very childlike, like kids on acid, and hers are too. We’re so much alike in believing art is supposed to be fun. She’s just a freak. I love her to death.”
