Watch Miley Cyrus and Laura Jane Grace Perform ‘True Trans Soul Rebel’

‘Bangerz’ singer and Against Me! frontwoman deliver acoustic rendition of ‘Transgender Dysphoria Blues’ song for Backyard Sessions

Miley Cyrus recently launched her guest-filled Backyard Sessions to raise awareness and support for her new Happy Hippie Foundation. For the fourth installment of the Sessions, which are recorded in Cyrus’ own backyard, the Bangerz singer is once again joined by Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace for an acoustic rendition of the Florida punk band’s “True Trans Soul Rebel.”

Cyrus lets Grace take the spotlight on this song off Against Me!’s Transgender Dysphoria Blues, one of Rolling Stone‘s 50 Best Albums of 2014, with Cyrus only contributing background vocals to the chorus. Cyrus previously kicked off the Backyard Sessions by performing alongside Joan Jett on the newly inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Famer‘s “Different.” Cyrus then shared her own solo cover of Dido’s “No Freedom” before linking back up with Jett and Grace for a rollicking version of the Replacements’ Let It Be ballad “Androgynous.”

Happy Hippie Foundation is an organization that aims to help bring awareness and raise funds for homeless youth with a special focus on the LGBT youth community. The issue is especially close to Cyrus, who sent a homeless teen to accept an award on her behalf at the MTV Video Music Awards. Cyrus was also very publicly criticized Indiana Governor Mike Pence –she called him an “asshole” – for his role in passing that state’s controversial “religious restoration” act [RFRA], which would have allowed for businesses to discriminate against the LGBT community.

Cyrus, who dedicated her life “to being whoever it is that I want to be, and also constantly learning and evolving,” said at the time, “That’s what’s wrong with [RFRA supporters] – they’re not choosing to live that way. And if you don’t choose to live that way, you’re not going to last in this generation because we are overtaking you. They are dinosaurs, and they are dying off. We are the new generation, and with that will come so much.”

Visit the Happy Hippie Foundation site to learn more and donate to the organization. Two more guests are still on tape for future Backyard Sessions: Ariana Grande and Melanie Safka, also known as Melanie of “Brand New Key” fame.
