Maroon 5 jump on the Pokémon Go trend in their new “Don’t Wanna Know” video. Adam Levine attempts to go about his daily business — driving his convertible, going to the gym, drinking liquor straight from the bottle — while dressed in a giant Pokémon suit, but ends up on the run with throngs of smartphone-bearing Pokémon addicts in hot pursuit. Other celebrities, including Ed Helms and Sarah Silverman, who portrays Levine’s ex, show up in the clip facing the same plight.
Though the single features a verse from Kendrick Lamar, the rapper does not appear in the video — either in human or Pokémon form. “Don’t Wanna Know,” contrasts Levine’s tale of heartbreak with a soft, carefree beat; radio programmers will find it easy to slide into a playlist after Sia’s “Cheap Thrills” or Major Lazer’s “Lean On.” Benny Blanco, who employed a similar style recently on Tory Lanez’s “Luv” and Major Lazer’s “Cold Water,” co-produced and co-wrote the song.
David Dobkin, who also oversaw Wedding Crashers, directed the clip, with Vince Vaughn making a Wedding Crashers-esque cameo in the clip’s final scene. Mid-visual, Dobkin aims for a bit of meta commentary: a cameraman breaks up the shoot and asks Levine to wear a cowboy hat on top of his Pokémon outfit. “I don’t know, man,” Levine says. “I don’t know if I want to be like, silly.”
