Watch Macklemore, Leon Bridges Face Demons in Stark ‘Kevin’ Video
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis‘ new LP This Unruly Mess I’ve Made doesn’t arrive until February 26th. But on Wednesday, the duo unveiled their video for “Kevin,” the addiction-fueled single featuring Leon Bridges. In the video, the rapper and up-and-coming soul singer are shown walking through an abandoned, dilapidated hospital and its overgrown grounds, delivering the contemplative track in stark black-and-white.
Lewis and Jason Koenig co-directed the clip, the second Unruly track to receive a music video following “Downtown.” “Kevin,” which debuted in November at the American Music Awards, tackles Macklemore’s own issues with drug abuse; after being sober since 2008, the rapper relapsed in the tail end of promoting The Heist, forcing him to get clean once again. The 12-step philosophy of rehab also helped Macklemore deal with whatever criticism he might from, from whoever might unleash it.
“There’s this tendency to be like, ‘Where’s the negative stuff? How valid is the criticism?'” Macklemore told Rolling Stone in September. “But honestly, what people think of me is none of my business. If I live on the Internet looking for public approval, I’m going to be miserable.”
