Watch Lianne La Havas’ Reflective ‘Green & Gold’ Video

Song and video explores singer-songwriter’s Greek and Jamaican heritage

Lianne La Havas reflects literally and lyrically on her childhood identity in the new clip for her smooth new single “Green & Gold.” The song appears on the British artist’s sophomore album Blood, released in July.

The Ravi Dhar-directed video features La Havas looking at herself in broken mirrors while bathed in shades of green and gold. After touching one of the mirror’s cracks, all the other cracks disappear making her reflection much clearer before she escapes into the sunny world outside.

Fellow British soul singer Jamie Lidell and Aqualung’s Matt Hales co-wrote and co-produced the song with La Havas. The autobiographical track — named for the Jamaican flag — explores her mixed heritage of being both Greek and Jamaican. “Six years old/Staring at my nose in the mirror/Trying to dip my toes in the mirror/Thinking, ‘Who’s that girl?’/And ‘Does the mirror world go on forever?'” La Havas sings.

In an interview with The Knockturnal, La Havas noted the song’s influence on the album title. “I co-produced that one, and I love it,” she said. “It is all completely literal and true stories, and it means a lot and is the reason for the title of the album.”
