Watch Khalid Perform Tender ‘Location’ on ‘Fallon’

Rising R&B singer brings digital love song to ‘The Tonight Show’

Khalid performed his hit “Location” with members of The Roots on The Tonight Show on Wednesday night. Clad in boots, cuffed jeans and a purple hoody, the singer crooned and shimmied through the track, which climbed to Number 38 on the Hot 100 this week.

“Location” is a modern love song, a plea for human contact in an isolating digital age. “I don’t wanna fall in love off of subtweets,” Khalid sings, “so let’s get personal.” On The Tonight Show, five players from the Roots helped recreate the quirky, minimal loop that carries the song.

“Location” came together on a trip to Atlanta while Khalid was still in high school. It was produced in part by Syk Sense, who also has credits on songs from Drake and Bryson Tiller. “I made the chorus [in Atlanta], then I had to go back to high school,” Khalid told Rolling Stone. “I waited for my next vacation, which was spring break, and I recorded the rest. My mom helped me out with the harmonies of the song, I released it a couple weeks before prom, and I won prom king.”
