Watch Kanye West Reference Debt, Einstein on New Song
Kanye West still hasn’t officially released his new LP The Life of Pablo, and if Tuesday night is any indication, it’s because the rapper is still tinkering with the album: At Los Angeles club 1OAK, West plugged his laptop into the house speakers to unveil a new track reportedly titled “Closest Thing to Einstein.” The Sampha-featuring, seven-minute track appears to have been recorded following the brief release of Pablo, as it references West’s frequent Twitter tirades, his debts and his recent boasts that he’s in the same league as visionaries and geniuses.
“People trying to say I’m going crazy on Twitter / My friends said to stay low / I guess it’s hard to decipher all of the deals, especially when you got family members on payroll,” West says on the track. “The media said it was outlandish spending / The media said ‘He’s way’ out of control … I know I’m the most influential / That Time cover was just confirmation / This generation’s closest thing to Einstein / Don’t worry about me, I’m fine.” Later on the track, West proclaims himself as “Modern MJ with an Off the Wall flow.”
West’s track arrives just hours after the rapper’s latest Twitter spree took aim at Bob Ezrin, the producer of albums like Pink Floyd’s The Wall and Kiss’ Destroyer. Writing for industry newsletter the Lefsetz Letter, Ezrin called West’s lyrics “sophomoric at best” and said of the rapper, “Kanye’s greatest achievements have been in the form of excessive behavior, egomaniacal tantrums and tasteless grandstanding.”
Ezrin’s comments popped up on West’s radar, with West taking to Twitter Tuesday to ask his 19.5 million followers, “Has anybody ever heard of Bob Ezrin???” West continued, “Your kids are ashamed of their dad… Sorry for speaking about kids… but could you imagine if you were Bob Ezrin’s kids… I’m so sorry for them… I will send them free Yeezys to make up for the embarrassment that you have caused your family!”
West’s Ezrin rant also made an innocent bystander out of Macklemore (“Bro you said Macklemore was more important musically than me… no offense to Macklemore, he’s a nice human being!”) and once again subtly shaded Taylor Swift: “I made Dark Fantasy and Watch the Throne in one year and wasn’t nominated for either and you know who has 2 albums of the year.”
