Watch Justin Bieber Stage Kidnapping in ‘What Do You Mean?’ Video

Neon-coated clip inspired by David Fincher’s ‘The Game’

Moments after Justin Bieber‘s high-flying, emotional comeback performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, the singer premiered his new video for “What Do You Mean?” The Brad Furman-directed clip follows the single’s skateboard-themed lyric video with a big-budget production packed with romance, action, vibrant cinematography and an intriguing ending.

The video opens with Bieber handing a wad of cash to a shady man played by actor John Leguizamo and asking him to “Make sure the girl don’t get hurt.” The girl in this case is Canadian model Xenia Deli, who spends the next few minutes of the video getting steamy with Bieber in a seedy, neon-coated motel room. Soon after, a pair of masked kidnappers burst in and take the couple captive in an abandoned warehouse.

While tied up, Bieber uses the lighter given to him by Leguizamo in the video’s opening to burn off his ropes. Bieber and his lover avoid their captors by jumping out a window and landing… in a giant cushion. It turns out that Bieber concocted the whole kidnapping to give his lady a thrill ride.

The twist ending is similar to David Fincher’s The Game, a film that similarly put an unsuspecting character played by Michael Douglas through terrifying rigors in the name of fun. All that’s missing in this video is a shirt that says, “I was drugged and left for dead in Mexico –And all I got was this stupid T-shirt.” “What Do You Mean?” wraps up, like its lyric video before it, with a dance party in a skate park.
