Watch Johnny Cash’s Moody Video for ‘She Used to Love Me a Lot’

Clip promotes ‘Out Among the Stars,’ a new collection of singer’s lost recordings

Out Among the Stars, an album of 12 lost Johnny Cash recordings from the early Eighties, will be released by Columbia/Legacy on March 25th. To accompany the new album, the label has released a stirring music video for “She Used to Love Me a Lot,” helmed by music video and film director John Hillcoat (The PropositionLawless).

Why Johnny Cash Is One of the Greatest Singers Ever

The clip weaves together a series of bleak roadside images from across desolate American landscapes: poverty-stricken city streets, tornados ravishing the countryside, seedy motels, close-ups of crying men. That weariness adds gravity to Cash’s melancholy tune, as he reflects on a lost love and croons, “I could almost read her thoughts,” over acoustic strums and dust-blown tremolo.

Out Among the Stars contains 12 previously unheard Cash recordings recorded between 1981 and 1984, including duets with wife June Carter Cash and his old pal Waylon Jennings. The tapes were discovered by archivists at Legacy and the country legend’s son, John Carter Cash.

“I really love this song,” the latter recently told Rolling Stone. “The depth that’s there reminds me of the real serious stuff that Dad did later in his life. And I truly think it’s one of the beautiful undiscovered gems in my dad’s catalog.” With the album’s release date looming, fans can also explore a 40-second album trailer, which features more commentary from John Carter Cash.
