John Legend gave a soulful performance of two Best Song nominees from La La Land. at the 2017 Oscars, “City of Stars” and “Audition (The Fools Who Dream).” Legend executive produced and appeared in La La Land, while Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone respectively, sang the versions that appear in the film.
Legend performed on a shifting stage modeled after scenes from the film including vivid backdrops of the Los Angeles night sky. The singer performed unaccompanied behind a grand piano, as backup dancers waltzed, spun around street lamps and even levitated. Immediately following the production, “City of Stars” co-writers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul won the Best Original Song award.
La La Land was nominated in 14 categories at this year’s ceremony, including Best Actor and Best Actress nominations for Gosling and Stone. Legend is not nominated this year, but won for Best Original Song alongside Common in 2015 for their track “Glory” off the Selma soundtrack. La La Land is Legend’s second major film role, having had a minor part in the 2008 musical comedy Soul Men starring Bernie Mac and Samuel L. Jackson.
