Watch John Krasinski Nail N’Sync’s ‘Bye Bye Bye’ on ‘Lip Sync Battle’
Of all the ridiculous teen-pop choreography from the TRL era, the puppet dancing from N’Sync‘s “Bye Bye Bye” video could be the most (in)famous. John Krasinski paid tribute to Justin Timberlake and company’s 2000 hit during Thursday’s Lip Sync Battle, mouthing the words with zeal as he mimicked every last move.
“Jimmy Fallon thinks he’s a real good friend with Justin Timberlake,” the actor says to open the above clip. “But he ain’t this good a friend ’cause I’m doing ‘Bye Bye Bye.'” Donning a wireless microphone headset, Krasinski struts across the stage with confidence – jerking around like a marionette and even dropping to his knees. (“I hurt my knee real bad,” he says in the post-mime interview. “On the drop – it’s bad. If we have ice, that would be amazing.”)
The commitment is impressive – but his competitor, Anna Kendrick, fires back with a strategic take on One Direction’s “Steal My Girl.” After employing her fiercest boy band dance moves, she unzips her jacket to reveal a T-shirt showing a faux-romantic photo of herself and Krasinski’s wife, Emily Blunt. (“She was supposed to be here,” Kendrick says of Blunt. “But she’s in Dubai. Classic Emily!”)
Krasinski goes even more old-school in round two, tackling Ike and Tina Turner’s soulful 1971 version of “Proud Mary.” After lip-syncing the entire spoken-word intro and first verse, he rips off his suit to reveal a Tina-styled silver dress. Kendrick follows with a take on Jennifer Lopez’ “Booty,” joined by a crew of twerking back-up dancers – and a brief cameo from the singer herself.
