Watch John Grant’s Freaky ‘Voodoo Doll’ Video
John Grant’s clever lyrics are relentless in their take-down of past lovers, critiques of masculinity and the world’s failings. So it is no surprise that the video for the song “Voodoo Doll,” from his third album, Grey Tickles, Black Pressure, is a strange take on helping a depressed friend.
“Although I do not necessarily recommend delicious and soothing hot chocolate as an antidote for severe depression,” Grant tells Rolling Stone, “Homemade chicken soup can be very healing if not over-salted and perhaps provide a much-needed protein boost.”
Directed by the Diamond Brothers, an identical twin directing team, the video shows Grant manipulating a woolen doll in the hope of rousing his pal who’s stuck on the sofa. During the course of the video Grant transforms into a Voodoo doctor in creepy face makeup.
“We’ve been long time fans of John Grant since Queen of Denmark and leapt at the chance to collaborate on a music video for him,” the Diamond Bros. says. “The rich visual imagery in his lyrics gave us so much to work with to create a lush world for his music to inhabit.”
