Watch Jimmy Fallon, Kevin Bacon Struggle to Spell Singing Kinks’ ‘Lola’

Duo recreate band’s 1970 classic with awkward rhymes, errors on ‘Tonight Show’

Jimmy Fallon and Kevin Bacon treated The Tonight Show audience to a “first draft” version of the Kinks‘ 1970 classic “Lola.” Impersonating Ray and Dave Davies with long wigs and retro clothes, they sang a version filled with awkward rhymes and hilarious spelling errors.

First, Fallon sang a verse about Lola “[teaching] him some Spanish,” and in particular “H-O-L-A, ‘Hola.'” From there, the rockers unleashed hilarious verses dedicated to gorgonzola cheese (“G-O-R-gonzola”), yoga (“Y-O-G-A, yoga”), Cubs legend Sammy Sosa (“S-O-S-A, Sosa”), granola (“G-R-A-N-ola”) and a gadget that “comes out in 30 years, and it’s a flip-phone, Motorola, M-O-T-O-rola.”

The funniest bit was Fallon’s ongoing inability to spell the word “doughnut.” “I’m looking for a breakfast food with a hole,” he sang. “But I don’t want a bagel to play that role/ I want a doughnut. ‘D-O-N-T, ‘doughnut.’ I cannot spell doughnut.” Later, he tried again but wound up spelling the name “Doug.”

Fallon and Bacon previously performed “First Draft of Rock” bits on Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin'” and the Beach Boys’ “Fun Fun Fun.” The segment originated from Fallon’s time hosting Late Night, where he reworked Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll.”
