Watch Jim James Join Anti-Trump Campaign With Gauzy ‘Same Old Lie’ Video

My Morning Jacket musician unveils clip as part of Dave Eggers’ 30 Days, 30 Songs series

My Morning Jacket‘s Jim James has unveiled a vibrant and engrossing new video for his latest solo track “Same Old Lie.” While the song will appear on James’ upcoming solo album, Eternally Even, the video arrives as part of the anti-Trump 30 Days, 30 Songs campaign.

The clip finds James washed in a variety of kaleidoscopic effects, singing the politically charged track – “Hate crimes, shelter lines/ They try to take what’s yours and mine” – while staring into the psychedelic abyss. Only near the end of the clip do the effects start to dissipate, but even the clearest images appear in frantic, abstract bursts.

Though James didn’t write “Same Old Lie” specifically for 30 Days, 30 Songs, the track is a perfect fit for the campaign. The series was launched by Dave Eggers and Noise Pop Festival producer/artist manager Jordan Kurland, and, per its mission statement, seeks to “speak out against the ignorant, divisive, and hateful campaign of Donald Trump.”

Death Cab for Cutie opened the 30 Days, 30 Songs series this week with “Million Dollar Loan,” followed by Aimee Mann’s, “Can’t You Tell?” and Bhi Bhiman’s “With Love from Russia.” The project will also feature a new track from Clipping as well as a never-before-released live song from R.E.M.

James, meanwhile, will release Eternally Even on November 4th. The LP marks his second solo effort and follows 2013’s Regions of Light and Sound of God.
