Watch Hudson Mohawke’s Neo-Noir ‘Very First Breath’ Video

Song is off Scottish producer-DJ’s first album in six years, ‘Lantern’

The visuals for Scottish producer-DJ Hudson Mohawke’s sophomore album Lantern have erred on the darker side. Following a creepy teaser trailer for the album, Mohawke has unveiled the music video for the equally menacing first single “Very First Breath.”

Directed by Sam de Jong, the “Very First Breath” clip has a neo-noir aesthetic reminiscent of the 2011 film Drive. The romantic, moody track — which features vocals from Irfane — is complemented by the story of two star-crossed lovers who appear to be in feuding gangs. After a tense phone conversation, the female protagonist drives to meet her boyfriend in a car with her crew, while a stabbing and gang beatdown subsequently ensues.

Mohawke premiered “Very First Breath” on BBC Radio 1’s show Hottest Record in the World. This week, German producer Boys Noize shared an energetic remix of the single. The Scottish producer announced his first LP in six years in early March, featuring guest vocals from Miguel, Antony Hegarty and Jhené Aiko. At the time, HudMo had only shared tour dates in the UK, Europe and Asia, but he has since announced more shows across the United States.
