Watch Hilarious Trailer for Lonely Island Comedy ‘Popstar’
The Lonely Island is returning to theaters this summer with their first movie since 2007’s Hot Rod, and the trailer for the comedy trio’s new feature promises a no-holds-barred music mockumentary that does for Justin Bieber what Walk Hard did for Johnny Cash. Starring Andy Samberg as a pop sensation called “Conner 4 Real,” Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping will detail — and mercilessly lampoon — the insane number of people required to power a 21st-century superstar. In Conner’s words: “It takes a village to make me look dope.”
In addition to a series of talking-head interviews with music industry iconoclasts like Usher, DJ Khaled, and Simon Cowell, the trailer includes Samberg humping a hologram Adam Levine, and Bill Hader — playing one of Conner’s roadies — having his heart resuscitated by a mad scientist Joanna Newsom (Samberg’s wife). But it’s Sarah Silverman as the pop star’s publicist who might end up stealing the show. “I’d love to get Conner to the point where he’s just kind of everywhere,” she says to the camera. “Like oxygen or gravity or clinical depression.”
Produced by Judd Apatow and directed by Samberg’s fellow Islanders Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping will hit theaters on June 3rd.
