Watch Good Charlotte’s Colorful, Nostalgic ’40 oz. Dream’ Video

Good Charlotte surprised the pop-punk scene last year by announcing their decision to reunite. They debuted single “Makeshift Love,” played an intimate comeback show at Los Angeles’ Troubadour and recently announced their first album in six years, Youth Authority, due on July 15th. Now, the band is unveiling the video for latest single “40 oz. Dream,” directed by Benji and Joel Madden’s brother, Josh. 

The nostalgic song looks back on the time when the band was on the come-up in L.A.’s punk scene. “I ran outside to see it’s not 2003/Turned on the radio, it’s so confusing,” Joel Madden sings, recalling the year after their breakthrough album, The Young and the Hopeless, debuted. During the course of the song — as seen in the coloring book where the lyrics are displayed and illustrated — the band pines for guitars on the radio, punk rockers under the age of 40, the more dangerous Gilman scene and a time when Eazy-E was on MTV.

“For us ’40 oz. Dream’ was the perfect song to kick off our new album,” lead guitarist Benji Madden tells Rolling Stone. “It’s got all the sarcasm and humor we’ve always loved, and lots of affection for the past and present. As a band that formed in 1996, it’s a fun moment to be welcomed back so warmly. We’re very happy to have found our place in 2016.”

As for director Josh Madden, he drew inspiration from artist and writer Shea Serrano’s pop-culture-friendly coloring book for adults. “I’m a big fan of Bun B’s Rap Coloring and Activity Book, and when the guys played me this song, it was the first thing I thought about — I started drawing right away,” he tells RS. “The whole idea of being young, watching MTV after school and seeing Snoop Dogg’s ‘What’s My Name?’ video made me think of being a kid. The influence Dre and Snoop have on us has always been pretty strong — those guys are serious about what they do, but they also showed us what a good time looks like.”

This summer, Good Charlotte will bring their California pop-punk party to Warped Tour. They’ll be joined by New Found Glory, Sum-41, Less Than Jake and Yellowcard.
