Watch Flaming Lips’ Eight-Song Tribute to David Bowie
Prior to the Flaming Lips‘ pair of concerts this weekend at Aspen, Colorado’s Belly Up, the band announced that both shows would feature an “extended David Bowie” set dedicated to the rock legend. Wayne Coyne and company delivered on their promise at Friday and Saturday’s shows by performing an eight-song, 40-minute Bowie medley that included “Space Oddity,” “Life on Mars?,” “Five Years,” “Ziggy Stardust,” “Fame,” The Man Who Sold the World,” “Golden Years” and “Ashes to Ashes.” Watch the performance above courtesy of Future Heart.
In addition to the eight-song tribute, at Saturday night’s show, Coyne spoke to the audience about Bowie’s impact on the band. The singer talked about Bowie’s rumored health problems over the last decade – rumors that inspired the Flaming Lips song “Is David Bowie Dying?” – and how he always hoped Bowie would show up to a Lips concert.
“We were in Tazmania when we heard that [Bowie] actually died and it was, and it still is, a strange, strange, sad shock,” Coyne said. “It still seems unbelievable that he was actually a real man. I think that’s what the motherfucker is. He was just a man. I think it doesn’t do him justice when people think he’s from outer space. He was a human.”
