Watch Father John Misty Perform Scathing ‘Ballad of the Dying Man’ on ‘Colbert’

Josh Tillman recruits six-person backing choir for ‘Pure Comedy’ track

Father John Misty performed his hilarious, gospel-tinged single “Ballad of the Dying Man” Tuesday on The Late Show. Supported by a massive band including six backing vocalists, Josh Tillman chronicled one self-centered man’s final thoughts before death: “Once I’m in the box, just think of all the overrated hacks running amok/ All the pretentious, ignorant voices that will go unchecked.”

“Ballad of the Dying Man” highlights Pure Comedy, Tillman’s third album under the Father John Misty moniker. He previously released somber piano ballad “Two Wildly Different Perspectives” and the LP’s grandiose title-track, the latter paired with a Trump-referencing video.

Last month, Tillman posted a trio of original “Generic Pop Songs,” which showcase the formulaic nature of radio singles. None of the tracks, which have since been scrubbed from his Soundcloud page, appear on the new album.

After the release of Pure Comedy, out April 7th, Father John Misty will embark on a brief North American tour, launching April 12th in San Diego.
