Flying eagles, crashing waves highlight clip for ‘Long Live the Angels’ single

Emeli Sandé bares her soul by crashing waves in the moody, black-and-white video for her new single “Hurts.” Director Charles Mehling fills the clip with disorienting camera movements, epic aerial shots and symbolic imagery like an eagle soaring overhead and a man walking alone on a beach.

Sandé explores the dramatic high end of her vocal range on “Hurts,” singing simple, lovelorn lines. “Baby, I’m not made of stone, it hurts,” she croons over surging strings and pounding percussion. “Loving you the way I do, it hurts.”

“Hurts” comes from the Scottish soul-pop singer’s second LP, Long Live the Angels, out November 11th. “‘Hurts’ is an explosion,” Sandé said in a statement. “It’s just … real talk … This entire album is about me not holding back and not censoring myself.”

Angels follows Sandé’s debut album, 2012’s Our Version of Events. The singer suggested that she struggled to deal with the LP’s success. “Sounds a bit dramatic, but I just wanted to disappear,” she said. “I just had this overwhelming sensation and realization everything had to stop. And then slowly it did.”
