Being worth nearly $1 billion and having one of the highest-profile jobs in the music industry doesn’t make you exempt from that awkward first day of work and meeting new co-workers.

For Apple, Beats’ Streaming Service Trumps Headphone Business

During Apple’s decidedly non-hip-hop Worldwide Developers Conference, the taciturn rapper/producer-turned-executive was introduced by Apple senior vice president of software engineering Craig Federighi.

“Hey doctor!,” Federighi says in the video below. “You’re on speakerphone via my Mac with over 6,000 amazing developers here at WWDC. We all want to welcome you to Apple.” After extolling the company’s apps, Dre, playing to the crowd, said, “By the way, I’m glad you called. I hear [Apple CEO] Tim [Cook] gets in pretty early. What time should I show up for work?”

Federighi was able to get more out of Dre than most people. In a New York Times profile of Jimmy Iovine, the paper noted that in a 30-minute joint interview with Dre and Iovine, Dre spoke once, saying, “This is the dream.”

Last week, Apple confirmed that it had bought Beats Electronics for $3 billion, with Dre and Iovine joining the company in unspecified roles. Apple said in a statement that, subject to regulatory approvals, the company will close the deal in the fourth quarter of their fiscal year, or by September 28th.
