Chvrches performed a rousing cover version of Calvin Harris and Rihanna’s “This Is What You Came For” Tuesday during a session for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge. The Scottish synth-pop trio offered a more organic approach to the electronic hit, with singer Lauren Mayberry crooning dynamically over massive Moog, throbbing bass and pitch-shifted echoes of the chorus hook.
The band also performed their infectious single “Bury It,” with Iain Cook switching from keys to bass guitar. He and synth player Martin Doherty rounded out the soaring chorus with harmony vocals.
In June, Chvrches released a remixed version of “Bury It,” featuring Paramore vocalist Hayley Williams. They followed with an animated, comic book-styled video in which the four musicians discover they have superpowers. The original version of “Bury It” is featured on the band’s second LP, 2015’s Every Open Eye.
