Watch Cher, James Corden Sing About Tinder on ‘I Got You Bae’

‘Late Late Show’ host dresses as Cher for goofy “I Got You Babe” parody

Cher joined James Corden Thursday to perform “I Got You, Bae,” a modernized version of Sonny & Cher’s 1965 hit “I Got You Babe,” on The Late Late Show. “I’m going to do one of my favorite songs tonight,” the singer told the crowd. “But I want to do it in a different way.”

Corden walked out onstage dressed, awkwardly, as Cher. Tossing around a black wig, he noted that Cher playing herself was “a bit obvious.” The two Chers filled their goofy duet with lyrics about love in 2016, exploring topics like “Netflix and chill,” deleting Internet porn history and making a relationship “Facebook offish.”

“They say we’re young and we don’t know/ How to find love without using your phone,” Cher crooned. “I don’t know if all that’s true/ ‘Cause you swiped me and, baby, I swiped you,” Corden replied.

In a sit-down interview with Corden, Cher admitted she didn’t initially like “I Got You Babe,” written by her musical and romantic partner, Sonny Bono.”I was sleeping,” she said. “We bought a piano for $82 that only had a couple of broken keys. And we had only furniture for the bedroom, and he used to have a piano in the living room. He used to write, and he’d wake me up and go, ‘Cher, come here, I just need you to sing this,’ which I never wanted to do. So he was writing, and he said, ‘Cher, I want you to come here and sing this.’ I said, ‘Sonny, I’m embarrassed.’ He said, ‘Cher, Jesus, it’s just me.’ It was ‘I Got You, Babe.’ And I went, ‘I’m going back to bed. This is just nothing.’

“It was on the piano. It just sounded like … I don’t even know. Just really not a hit song,” she continued. “But I said the same thing about [1989 solo hit ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’] … Because Diane Warren did the demo, and it was terrible. And I love her, as much as I love her … Finally, she said, ‘I’ll pay for it.’ And if you know Diane Warren, that’s a big [thing]. I said, ‘OK, babe, if you’re gonna pay for it, you have to believe it in so much – I’ll do it.’ Two takes, that was it.'”
