Watch Brockhampton Turn Alicia Keys’ ‘Un-Thinkable’ Into Sinister Jam

Pop-rap collective take on hit co-written by Drake for Triple J’s “Like a Version”

Brockhampton took a momentary break from being America’s sweetest boy band to shine a light on the solo talents of Bearface. On Triple J’s latest “Like A Version,” Ciarán McDonald aka Bearface covers Alicia Key’s 2010 classic, “Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready),” as the rest of Brockhampton lay quietly on the floor surrounded by candles.

Covering an Alicia Keys song is an odd risk for McDonald. As Bearface paces around the room reading from his iPhone, haunted reverb-soaked vocals fill the room. He does a commendable job trying to deconstruct the late 2000s hit and build it back up into something less sweet and more sinister. The experiment isn’t fully successful, but it’s entertaining to see the juggling act unfold.

“Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready)” was always one of Keys’ weirder hits. Co-written by Drake and produced by Noah “40” Shebib, the song always felt like the two Canadian musicians trying to spread the sound they popularized on 2008’s So Far Gone to the rest of pop before they mastered it themselves.

In a 2010 BET interview, Drake revealed that “Un-Thinkable” is partially inspired by a conversation he had with Nicki Minaj. “It is [about Minaj], I’m not gonna lie,” Drake said. “The concept came from a conversation that we had, or conversations we have. I wrote it based off two things: Number one, based off that, and then two, based off Alicia and Swizz and their situation, and it just seemed fitting. It was like the perfect concept.”

Brockhampton also performed “San Marcos” from their latest album, Iridescence.
