Beck tried out some funky dance moves at a recent Montreal concert, when his band launched into the title track of Prince‘s 1982 album 1999. The video (via Stereogum), shows about a minute of Beck’s 2005 Guero single “E-Pro” before it cuts and the essence of the Purple One takes over. It begins with Beck on his knees singing the lyric “War is all around us/My mind says prepare to fight,” about midway through the track, after which he jumps up, wiggles for a bit and proceeds to gyrate and skate around the stage as if it were a gig at First Avenue. According to, the band jammed and then closed the night with Odelay’s “Where It’s At.”

Beck’s newfound spry stage presence shows an about-face recovery for the artist, who suffered a spinal injury on the set for his “E-Pro” video that nearly ended his touring career. “I stopped touring indefinitely, and I didn’t know if I ever would again,” he told Rolling Stone in March. “I wasn’t able to use my guitar and voice in the same way. It altered my life for a long time.”

Despite his injury, Beck continued to produce records in the time between his previous LP, 2008’s Modern Guilt, and Morning Phase, which he put out this year. His most recent production work came out in early June when Jenny Lewis released “Just One of the Guys,” the first song from her forthcoming record The Voyager.
