Watch Bat for Lashes’ Mournful ‘In God’s House’ Video
Bat for Lashes’ upcoming concept album, The Bride, tells the story of a woman whose fiancé dies in a car crash while traveling to their wedding. Now the musician brings that imagery to life with her artful, retro-styled video for “In God’s House,” which premiered Friday via Stereogum.
Natasha Khan (Bat for Lashes) conceptualized and co-directed the clip with John De Menil. She stars as a woman mourning at a desert gravesite lit by a neon cross. Dressed in a fur coat and red veil, she writhes in agony by a car as day fades to night. “In God’s house I do wait / for my love on our wedding day,” she sings over arpeggiated synths. “Dewy eyes and lashes long / for my love, but I’m feeling something’s wrong.”
The Bride is out July 1st via Parlophone/Warner Bros. Khan announced the project in early March, accompanied by another brooding clip for “In God’s House.” She teased the album in February by releasing “I Do,” named after a short film she wrote and directed (based on the same plot as The Bride) which will premiere in April at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Bat for Lashes will play a small run of church shows building up to the album release. Fans are encouraged to dress in formal or wedding attire, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the David Lynch Foundation. Tickets go on sale Friday, March 18th, via the Bat for Lashes website.
The Bride follows 2012 Bat for Lashes LP, The Haunted Man, and Khan’s 2015 collaboration Sexwitch, featuring indie-rock band TOY and producer Dan Carey.
