Watch Anohni’s Surreal ‘Hopelessness’ Video
Anohni blends corporate America and medieval barbarism in the strange but stirring new video for “Hopelessness,” the title track of her latest record.
Described by director Alex Carver as “the fever dream of an anonymous corporate woman,” the clip opens with a long, silent shot in which the woman treks down to a body of water and begins putting eels in her purse. She later stumbles upon a surreal makeshift court scene, in which a horse is shown its rights on an iPad after seemingly killing a knight.
As “Hopeless” builds, the clip jumps between close-up shots of the woman mouthing Anohni’s aching lyrics and the kangaroo court spotting the woman and running after her, backing her up against a wall and pelting her with eels. The mob eventually deserts her, though in the clip’s final moments, she is saved – by a stretch limousine.
Anohni released Hopelessness back in May, crafting the album with Scottish DJ-producer Hudson Mohawke and electronic experimentalist Oneohtrix Point Never.
