Watch Anohni’s Devastating ‘Marrow’ Video
Anohni has shared another stark, simple video off her Hopelessness album, this time for “Marrow.” Like the album’s previous clips, the video centers on a static shot of one person – in this case, visual artist Lorraine O’Grady – as they “sing” along to the LP’s devastating tracks.
In “Marrow,” O’Grady’s cheerful demeanor at the beginning at the video dissipates into grief as she lip syncs to lyrics like, “Suck the oil out of her face / Burn her hair, boil her skin.”
Anohni wrote of the video in a statement, “Capitalism cares only for wealth extraction, from the earth and from its people. We are slaughtering the future. Only a wartime effort can save us now. Stand with the Water protectors in North Dakota. There is only one prayer left: save the earth.”
“Marrow” follows previous Hopelessness videos like “Crisis” starring Storm Lever, “Drone Bomb Me” with Naomi Campbell and “I Don’t Love You Anymore” starring Anohni herself.
Earlier in the year, Anohni spoke to Rolling Stone about Hopelessness, which landed on Rolling Stone‘s 50 Best Albums of 2016 list.
“People that know my music tend to rely on my voice as a source of comfort,” Anohni said of her new LP, which spans topics like drone bombing, surveillance, U.S. foreign policy and climate change. “This album was me not only making a series of indictments of our world, but also dealing with my own complicity as a participant in this prevailing consumer culture we’re all enmeshed in.”
